BY BLAIR CURRIE Contributing Writer On a visit to Washington, D.C. re cently, a group of Edentonians vis ited the World War II Memorial. The monument is magnificent, but there was a tinge of sadness knowing it took sixty years to properly honor the service men and women who served during that conflict. As we listened to the tour guide giving de tails, we were struck by the statement that “1,000 World War II veterans die daily!” We wondered at that time, just how many of those “Heroes of Yesteryear” were still with us, but in Edenton, there are still a goodly number of World War II veterans. They talk mod estly of their service, but valor must have been a part to the daily experi See TRIBUTE On Page 2-A Chowan Memorial Dhy plans The Edward G: Bond Post $30 American Legion is planning a Me morial Day Service at the Chowan County Veterans Memorial May 30 at 1 p.m. The Rev. This year's Relay raised $136,000, exceeding last year's total of $125,000. Fundraising exceeds that of prior years BY SEAN JACKSON The Chowan Herald Finding a cure for cancer took a momentary backseat Friday evening as scores of Relay For Life participants scurried under tents and into cars when a rainstorm tore across the Edenton Aces Ath letic Complex. But a bit of rain and wind didn’t deter participants in the annual fundraiser from doing what they do best: Non stop walking to help raise money for a cure for cancer. Only they began their laps in the John A. Holmes High School gym, not the school’s track. “It was a touching cer emony,” Jack Parker, chairman of the Chowan-Perquimans Re lay for Life 2005 luminary drive, said of opening the events in side the gym. However, the rain did dim the lighting of the luminaries, which traditionally girdle the track in honor of cancer survi vors, and in memory of those who battled the disease. “We were right ready to light the candles,” Paker said, "when the rain came.” The candles — placed inside paper bags — will be used for See RELAY On Page 3-A Local officials praising clean-up efforts Knighton: Council ‘pleased’ with efforts at former Leary Bros, site Staff photo by Earline White Demolition at the intersection of Virginia Road and North Broad Street has been going on this week. BY SEAN JACKSON The ChoWan Herald Town officials are applaud ing the efforts by owners of the former Leary Brothers site at the intersection of Virginia Road and North Broad Street. “The Town Council is really pleased about the clean-up work taking place at Larry Sellers and Steve Lane’s prop erty,” Knighton said Monday In contrast, they are gearing up for a potential foreclosure against the owners of a com mercial tract razed by the town in March and April. Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton said Monday that the owners of the land on North Broad Street — formerly the site of Northside Shopping Center — missed a May'20 deadline to reimburse the town for the demolition costs, roughly $160,000. “So this week, the (town’s foreclosure) attorney (Travis Ellis) will file paperwork for foreclosure proceedings,’ Knighton said in an email re sponse to questions about the status of the site, now just a parking lot and L-shaped con crete slab. A pro posal that has been discussed for several years, to purchase the 1885 Roanoke River Light house and install it on the wa terfront, moved one step closer to becoming a reality Monday night when the town’s public works committee asked that the proposal expressing sup port for such a plan be brought before the Edenton Town Council for its consideration.
